A head gasket can leak into the oiling system (crankcase) or out to the atmosphere without ever entering the coolant system. If your engine has an open deck, you're pretty much guaranteed to have coolant enter the cylinders in case of a head gasket leak, but with a closed deck there are plenty of areas that combustion can leak out without entering the cooling system. You'll need a diesel specific compression tester, the pressure in a diesel will blow up a normal compression tester for gas engines. It won't start, though it's making a spark. I decided to compression test it before replacing the carb, just becuase it's quick. It's making around 70PSI. I'm fine with rebuilding it because I want to learn. However, I'm questioning the validity of the compression tester itself. It's a car compression tester and I had to use a thread adapter.Hi friends, I hope you're having a great day. Recently, I've planned to buy a 2007 Honda S2000 with about 75-80k miles. Over the phone, the seller mentioned that the cylinders produced about 180 PSI on a compression test he had run when he bought it (a year or so ago); given that "optimal" compression is usually said to be around 220 PSI on S2000 engines, this made me . As a motorcycle, car, or truck owner, you'll find the PCS Compression Tester Kit to be an ideal choice for diagnosing engine issues, thanks to its versatility in catering to a wide range of vehicles.. Look at the end of the compression tester hose. There should be a Schrader valve. You have to have one otherwise it can't build and hold pressure. Sometimes they are removed to do leak-down tests and forget to put back in. The hose also needs an o-ring for a good seal.

If your compression tester is one piece, this won't work. Most 2 piece use standard air line fittings, so you just pull the gauge off and plug the compression tester hose to the air compressor hose. It will work to just listen for leaking air (if you actually can hear the air escaping) the other problem is that you are putting full 100+psi air .
So compression testers are designed to give you a general idea of the condition of your engine. I'm a big fan of doing a cold compression test and a hot compression test. Cold compression is going to give you the best idea of the condition of the motor while a hot compression test will tell you the overall condition. The unsafe method is to remove the sparkplugs or glowplugs, remove the fuel fuse and place a finger a few inches away (not sealing) the spark/glow plug hole.

Yes both test are possible. Compression test is normally used to determine (partial) condition of engine. Leak down test is normally used to determine what's the fault with engine but it will also give you leak down number that can be used to determine (the same partial) condition of the engine. Leak down test needs a compressor. Thanks for posting on r/MechanicAdvice!Please review the rules.Asking about a second opinion (ie "Is the shop trying to fleece me?"), please read through CJM8515's post on the subject. and remember to please post the year/make/model of the vehicle you are working on. Before dropping money on parts, I wanted to make sure the engine is healthy, so I bought this compression tester from Harbor Freight and used it today to find cylinder 1 at 110 psi the first time, then I cranked it a second time and got 40 psi. This initial test was done with only that spark plug removed, 2-6 were all still installed. The company is kind of cheap so we all don't have the same brand of compression testers, so we are looking to buy a test stand that we can measure how accurate our testers are. I was wondering if any one else out there might be able to point me in the right direction, I looked on Google and the only thing coming up is like spring testers. ThanksTo test the compression ratio I ran all common software I usually run and created memory pressure to force data out to swap. I then dumped swap with dd and used that representative dump to test the compression ratio. To test compression time I used statistics of the total amount of data read and written to swap I had collected over a few years.
Well check the coil pack connector carefully. Does it run rough? Cylinder 3 isn't the usual one for compression problems but could be a burnt valve, etc. Next step is a smoke test if you have the ability or you can check valve lash. What was the compression?
I think the best thing to do would be to set up some test cases (textures, raw renders from your renderer, comps, etc). If you have some exrs already, then grab and set up some Python code (I recommend OpenImageIO if you have it compiled) to go through read/write speeds, compression size, and finally for the lossy ones, a min/average/max diff .The spec itself is a range. And you're testing to 1. make sure your compression for a given cylinder is in range, and that each cylinder is in a % of each other. And if necessary, whether there's a difference between wet and dry. And I can say that any of the HF gauge shortcomings will not impact your ability to do a compression test.

A leak down test wont tell you if there is a leak anywhere else, it will tell you where your compression is leaking to. First - did you open the throttle all the way during your compression test?
